When you want to make your own music, you have the freedom to choose whether to use a software, a hardware or both. Whatever you choose, It is important to know the advantages and disadvantages of the tools used in music making. In this article you will find 8 reasons why to pick software.
1. Portability - a midi keyboard and a laptop are the only set up you need. Thousands of sound samples, effects and a number of software can be stored in your laptop. You can make your own music everywhere and anywhere.
2. Convenience and Time - Using programs like Reason, you will enjoy almost any kind of instrument just in one set up. In my set up, I have an Akai MPC and Yamaha Triton. I need to load the drum to my MPC, and set both of these devices to a certain track (e.g track#1), locate the sound in the keyboard and set my MPC to a midi input mode and then record. The entire process is a cycle. After the track is completed, I need to save the instruments to its storage devices. In some cases, both do not save right as you are expecting and it pisses me off. In summary, majority of the things you need are available in one software making it easier for you to save and edit your music.
3. Easy Editing - When using a midi, you can adjust each and every note from velocity, length and etc. If you want to edit samples, you just have to look on the wave forms, chop up, and edit the sounds in various ways.
4. Zero Tracking - The process wherein you record the beats/sound made using a hardware into your computer is called tracking. This is a burden for me because you need to record individual tracks, and its time consuming. In addition to the time kill, the way your music sounded originally with the hardware is a bit different from the recorded one. On the other hand, using a software is better. You just have to export the tracks you made into a wave format and mix them down.
5. Resources are Free - If you search on the internet, there are many websites online offering plenty of free effects, VST's and other sound samples. In fact, some VST's may sound better than a real hardware.
6. Ability to Share - There are plenty of software being made with some kind of collaboration software within it. For example in FL, you can actually export your beats through a zip file that includes the samples you used when you made it. You can send the file then to someone and allow them to continue your work. Protocols and Reason also have similar features.
7. Affordability - When you deal with an equipment, you just can't buy one thing. If you purchase a keyboard (costing up to a grand), a soundcard is also needed for recording, audio cables, probably a mixer and some cables for your midi. If you want to get an updated equipment, you are more likely to end up buying next piece of hardware since their software update is limited. For a software, almost everyone has their own computer. What is needed is a music making software, good speakers, and an optional midi keyboard. Resources are available online and updates are free to download.
8. Space - A hardware can consume a lot of space especially when you don't have an extra room for your set up. With software, just imagine a laptop just above your desk.

Both software and hardware has its own advantages and disadvantages but the software helps me save time space and money. Consider yourself a fool not to enjoy all those free resources online from sound effects to VST's. Overall, the issue is not about hardware you own rather it's the music you create. You can suck with a perfect studio or rock with Dubturbo. It is your choice.
