World of Sound: Creating, Recording And Manipulating Audio

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

The music industry, the film industry, television, advertising and live concert events: what do they all have in common? They all depend on excellent sound, and excellent sound comes from excellently-trained audio experts. If you've ever dreamed about being at the consoles behind any one of these entertaining industries, consider a career in audio.

It is almost impossible to begin a career in audio without specialized training. Many schools and institutes offer programs that will help turn up the volume on your career prospects. Take the time to research and compare several programs. Some things to consider are the facilities. While having the latest technology is great, you might not always get to work on state-of-the-art equipment right after school. Be sure to get a full education on a wide range of equipment. Another thing is the instructors; a school is only as good as its teachers. Great teachers gain their experience both inside the classroom and out in the real world. Take time to research faculties, you never know if your teacher may have worked with your favourite singer or on your favourite TV show. Finally, making the transition from student to professional isn't always easy, so look for schools with job placement programs. Consider these and other factors when selecting a program.

The world of audio is separated into several branches. Studio recording deals mainly with production and post-production mixing, getting the quality of audio just right. Live recording is exciting because of its real-time connection to concerts, artists and events. Sound design gives you the creative control over making new sounds and effects. All of these fields require intense training, dedication, and a serious commitment to knowing and caring what resonates in our ears and in our minds.

Studio recording graduates can expect to find work in any number of areas where sound is a major player. Aside from recording studios, they can work at concert venues, arenas, clubs, TV and radio stations, film production companies, advertising agencies and music festivals. Audio engineering school will take you through all the aspects of recording and live sound from analog, digital and even MIDI (musical instrument digital interface) sequencing, recording and mixing. You will have to grasp both the technical side as well as the creative/musical side.

Sound engineering school is slightly more creative as this is the field where new sounds are dreamed up in the minds of the engineers, then created through any number of methods. Like recording, the student will become familiar with the different aspects of audio generation, but perhaps with slightly more of an emphasis on manipulating real-world objects and computer-simulated sounds to get that perfect effect. Some other areas where a sound designer may find work are post-production film and TV studios, focusing on special sound effects, as well as multimedia and video game design companies.

The world around us is full of amazing sounds. Some are natural, and can be recorded and manipulated. Some are the products of creative and talented individuals. If you want to help compose the soundtracks of our lives, studying at an audio school will put you on the right track.

Visit Trebas Institute for more information on  audio schools.

What Is a High-Pass Filter and What Is It Used For?

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Many beginning and novice sound engineers see this little button on their mixing console and never really figure out what it does. This button is usually located just above or below the gain knob on an analog console and may be found in the EQ section of most digital consoles. So what button am I talking about and why should you care?

This is the High-Pass Filter and it is one of the console's most underused buttons.

What is a high-pass filter?

A high-pass filter is an audio frequency filter that cuts out frequencies that fall below a specific frequency level. These filters may be marked as /80 or /100 which simply mean that the filter will cut out those frequencies below 80Hz or 100Hz. High-pass filters don't just simply hack off the frequencies, though. Like EQ's and crossovers, they have a slope associated with them that gradually attenuates (cuts) the frequencies below the selected level.

Do you really need to use the high-pass filter when you are mixing?

Yes. Every engineer, whether they are new to the job or an industry veteran, should be familiar with this filter and how it can help them in their mixes.

Think about your live mixes... there are numerous low frequency sounds that can arise on stage at almost any time during a gig. Maybe the vocalist bounces the mic stand around, with the mic still attached. The kick drum has too much low, low end and it is very muddy or maybe the backup vocalist, aka the bassist, has a very low voice and you need to make his voice easier to understand.

The high-pass filter can help you cut out those real low, muddy and sometimes annoying frequencies in almost any instrument or voice. The great thing is that if you're not sure what it will sound like, you can turn it on and off and hear the difference, without causing major issues to your mix.

How should you use the high-pass filter?

There are some simple guidelines for using the filter. The biggest is that it doesn't always need to be on, but can become a saving grace in certain situations. Here are a few guidelines to help you along:

If the instrument or mic sound source doesn't use or reproduce the frequencies that the high-pass filter would cut out, then turn on the filter on that channel.Once you have set your basic mix for the show, engage the filter one-by-one on each channel and listen to the difference. If the sound is better with it on, leave it on.Finally... simply experiment. You may find that when you engage the filter on certain instruments or voices, it helps to give them a great sound that may fit a specific song or quite possibly the entire gig.

The high-pass filter can become your favorite button on your mixing console. Learn to use it and love it and it will help you create better mixes.

4 Easy Tips to a Boost Your DJ Career

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

1. Think Big

Over the past 14 years, I have held DJ residencies in some of the top clubs around the world, and played at fashion shows, celebrity weddings and at wrap-parties for several big-budget Hollywood movies, at home and abroad. For a good DJ, the potential is unlimited and your market is as big as your imagination and your work ethic. Your DJ career can take you around the world as it has done for me and many others. Remember, great music is universally in demand. So if you have a valid passport and willingness for travel, the world can be your stage!

2. Find a Niche

I can tell you that there are tons of opportunities out there for good DJ. However, It is extremely important for a DJ to find a niche, and to develop a good reputation amongst the event planners, party promoter, agents and club owners that operate in that niche market. Make sure that the niche market you choose is something you like. The more you look forward to your gigs the more motivated you will be to perform well, which will take you very far as a DJ. Likewise, the more you practice to perform well, the better DJ you will become, which again will make you more marketable. There is absolutely no substitute for hard work in this industry. So find a niche and get to it!

3. Keep an open mind

Making a name for yourself as a DJ in a particular niche can leverage your DJ success for years to come. But while looking for a niche, remember to keep an open mind. Outside of the clubs, DJs are often in demand for weddings, fashion shows, special events or wherever there is a need for good music. In addition, opportunity, for money success and future career advancement can lay in some very surprising places. Deejaying in strip clubs, for instance, can be quite lucrative. Several famous DJs have gotten their start playing in the strip clubs in Vegas, Atlanta and Miami, which eventually led them to fame and fortune. Remember, success often requires us to think outside of the box, so keep an open mind.

4. Stay on top of your game

For most of us, deejaying is not only our passion, it is our business and like any other business the information you operate on can make the difference between success and failure. Networking, like in any other business can create pathways to success. Therefore you should cultivate relationships with other DJs, promoters and agents in your area, or in the area in which you are seeking to score gigs. Furthermore, whether it be through DJ blogs, forums, videos, magazines or books, in order to rise to the top of the game, you will need to seek inside knowledge from those who possess it.

What Do I Need to Make Rap Beats?

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

First off you will need some type of program, whether that is software or hardware to create the beats. In my experience of over 20 years with making beats i have used both pieces - hardware and software. I still use both today.

So let me talk a little bit about the Hardware side. By Hardware I mean physical Drum Machines, Samplers and Keyboards/Workstations that you touch and play with your hands. I first started out with a DR-660 drum machine about 18 years ago. This was my first piece of "real" studio equipment. Before then I was just using breakbeat records on turntables and recording over a home stereo. This drum machine had stocks sounds that could be manipulated with effects like reverb and flange but you could not add sounds. You could however record patterns and then arrange those patterns into songs. I was able to learn a lot by using that drum machine and it was good to be able to play the pads to hear and record the sounds.

Later on I was able to get my hands on a Roland XP-60 Workstation and a Roland MV-8000 Sampler/Sequencer. Again this is physical hardware that you are able to play. The XP-60 had stock sounds but could you not add sounds. However, the MV-8000 which is a sampler/sequencer was able to add sounds and sample. This really opened the door for creativity being able to import new sounds and sample new things.

Secondly let me talk a little bit about software used for creating beats. The first piece of software that I used was Cakewalk, followed by Fruit Loops Studio and finally Reason by Propellerhead. I had always liked the feel of Hardware until I got used to using software. In my opinion, the biggest advantage to using software is the price. You can get software for a third of the price you spend on hardware. If you are PC literate which a lot of the younger generation is now, it is easier to cut, copy and paste within the software. This was not as easy when using Hardware.

Lastly you will need to have rhythm and some type of music ability. Although I had basic music composition classes while in High School, I am no way a musician or know how to play by reading notes. However, I do have the ability to keep rhythm with a beat metronome and I am able to play melodies along with beats. No matter if you choose Hardware of Software, you will need to be able to keep rhythm and play in key when you make your beats.

4 Ways to Deal With Rude People in the Music Industry

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

In your musical journey you are bound to come across people who are rude to you. People may say mean things to your face, or they may spread rumors about you. The rude person may be the leader of a band, or another band mate who just wants to make life harder on you. Whatever the case may be there are ways you can make the best of the situation. Here are 4 ways to deal with rude people in the music industry.

1: Kill them with kindness. Every time you see them say hi and be friendly. Compliment them about something they did well. When you are nice to someone, you make it harder for them to be rude to you. When you are nice to a rude person, you can be guilt free and know that you did nothing to encourage them to be rude. Being nice always pays off.

2: Avoid the person. If being nice to the person being rude to you does not help, you can ignore them. If the person does not have a chance to do something to you, then they cannot do it. If you see them coming, decide you need to go to the bathroom. Find ways to avoid any problems that may arise. Sometimes avoiding someone is the answer, but sometimes you cannot avoid your problems.

3: Set up a non confrontational time to ask them why they are acting rude. If you cannot avoid the person, then you may find it helpful to ask the person why they are acting rude. Make sure this time you set up is not seen as an attack by the person. Ask them to go to a coffee shop with you sometime and have a conversation and nicely tell them how you feel. You may be surprised by their response. Sometimes people that are shy appear rude to others. It may be nothing personal against you and this is a nice gentle way to find out.

4: Seek advice from leadership. Assuming the person being rude to you is not the leader, you can consult the leader about your problems. The leader may have advice for you based on the situation; he might also have knowledge about the rude person that you do not know. The rude person may be rude to everyone or may just be having a bad day. Leadership should only be an option if you cannot work it out directly with the rude person.

When working in music, you will cross paths with people who are rude to you. Being rude back will only make your problems worse. There are ways you can resolve problems with the other person without being rude as well. If you are nice to them, things might change and you could even become friends!

Using YouTube to Generate A Buzz for Your Music

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

The recent expansion of rap music has spread like a virus throughout the music world. Hip Hop music has come a long way since the early 1980's, when it was first introduced to the general public. From street side cyphers, to lyrical battles, and even multi million dollar performances, rap has cemented its place in music history. There is something about strong lyrics over a hard hitting track that pierces the brain and delivers the message in as varied a manner that few other forms of music can accomplish. There is something about the unfiltered emotion, and unique delivery of each individual artist that makes rap a continuing source of unique music.

Due to the increased availability of studio gear and the ability to gain exposure via social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, independent artists are making a huge wave in today's rap world. These are the people making a name for themselves without the support of a major record label. This approach takes longer, requires a lot more work, and enough money to bankroll the operation until it pays for itself. However these people maintain full creative control of their project from open to close. Because of this, these people tend take their music very seriously, and it shows in the final product.

With the growth of the internet, many entertainers have turned to online promotion techniques to start garnering a name for themselves. This is very important from a business and marketing stand point, because this puts the whole world at your fingertips as a potential fanbase. With the proper techniques you can easily start getting a buzz for your project without having to invest large sums of money.

One of the best ways to do this is by uploading videos on YouTube. The main reason is because they are owned by Google, which means reliability is not an issue, and they rank as the second largest search engine worldwide. Right behind Google. Because of this YouTube is the pretty much globally accepted video platform on mobile devices. Even Apple which has strangled pretty much all choice out of their merchandise allows users to view YouTube without having to download an app. Another key feature of YouTube over other video hosts is the monetization feature. This means that revenue generated by Google AdWords because of your content will make you a percentage of that money. You must own the copyrights to tracks you monetize, so you must either produce your own beats, or purchase the commercial rights to the beats you plan on using on your project.

If you have a diverse catalog of tracks available on this site, and are pulling in thousands of views a day you can see how this can add up to a reasonable amount of money. There are several musicians pulling in a part time income just off of their YouTube accounts, so do not underestimate the importance of making a video you can monetize. If people like your video enough, it may even go viral with very little extra promotion on your part. This video may be viewed millions of times before everything is said and done, so make sure you put out a solid product. If you can't afford to have a high budget music video made, put out whatever you can afford. As long as the track is available on YouTube you've made progress. Something is always better than nothing.

If you are interested in buying beats to use on your project please don't hesitate to contact me or visit this page for beats.
