Naming a heavy metal band can be a tricky thing. While there does not seem to be a standard, and to say all band names fit a specific formula is unfair, there are several trends and currents that heavy metal bands seem to follow when naming their project. Below we'll discuss just a few of those and pontificate on why they came to be.
Evil/Satanic
Because of heavy metal's preoccupation with the darker side of life it is not uncommon to have bands naming them selves after "evil" or "satanic" themes. Using other names for the devil, or alternate spellings is also popular. In almost every instance of a name involving the evil or satanic the band is doing so tongue-in-cheek.
Examples include:
Dream EvilSatan's HostSatanic WarmasterEvileEvilfeastDeath/Gore
Once again due to a preoccupation with the "dark" a lot of heavy metal band names involve death or gore. This is something you are most likely to see in the genres of death metal, gore, grind, and, in some cases, black metal. That said, you would be hard pressed to find a genre of heavy metal, even the flowery and lovable power metal, that did not have at least one band whose name came about from some morbid idea or imagery.
Examples include:
DeathCannibal CorpseAutopsySepticfleshMy Dying BrideEnvironmental
A more recent popular movement in band names, especially those of black metal bands, is naming your project after something environmental. This is a result of bands of this genres affinity for nature and primeval ways. The influence here may also be that of ancestral ties, nationalism, and even isolationism.
Examples include:
Forest of FogSolsticePantheistForest SilenceManilla RoadFinsterforstFantasy
We who listen to heavy metal love us some fantasy and science fiction. Be it for purposes of escapism, flights of fancy, or to better understand the real world, fantasy speaks to our souls and goes hand in hand with much of the music. Most often you'll see names invoked from fantasy in the genres of power and black meal but no genre is immune to its influence.
Examples include:
Demons and WizardsBurzumThe RingTrollskogenBe'lakorOther
Of course a list so small could never be all encompassing so here will make mention of some other band names that don't really fit the aforementioned categories but are still typically metal in their form:
